UK insurance providers allow drivers to protect their no claims bonus

If you’re hit by an uninsured driver your no claims bonus is now protected with LV and Direct Line

Two of the UK’s largest insurance providers are leading the way by allowing drivers to protect their no claims bonus if involved in an accident with an uninsured driver, or if their car is vandalised.

According to a new report, the move is designed to help customers who’ve been hit by an uninsured driver and need to make a claim, allowing them to do so and still keep their no claims discount.

ā€œWe believe that law-abiding insured drivers should not be penalised for the actions of uninsured drivers or those vandalising their cars,” said Heather Smith, managing director of direct insurance at LV.

Insuring your car through other providers can result in the loss of either some or all of your no claims bonus in the event of a claim despite it not being your fault, mainly because of any money that’s not recouped from the other driver’s insurer.

UK insurance providers allow drivers to protect their no claims bonus.

Of course, you can protect your no claims bonus but this is an extra charge added to your annual insurance policy.

ā€œHit while parked? No one wants to take the rap for someone elseā€™s mistake. Thatā€™s why with Direct Line, you wonā€™t lose any of your earned no claim discount where itā€™s not your fault,ā€ this is what it states on Direct Line’s website.

With Direct Line, your no claims bonus is protected if your vehicle is bumped into when parked up, damaged by potholes or poorly maintained roads, stolen or damaged because of a flood or fire, or if your vehicle is struck by a domestic or wild animal, or some other kind of object/debris.

New and existing customers with a comprehensive car insurance policy will benefit from the changes made by LV and Direct Line.

ā€œWe understood the frustration when our customers had to make a claim when itā€™s no fault of their own and there was not a third party to claim against. Then to add further to their annoyance and sense of injustice, theyā€™d lose all or part of their no claims discount,” said Rob Miles, director of motor insurance at Direct Line, adding: ā€œHowever, with these changes to our comprehensive motor insurance policy, this wonā€™t happen anymore.”
