Will Ford Take The Crown Once Again, As They’ve Done For The Past 50 Years?

 

Around this time every year, we discover which cars motorists in the UK have loved the most during the previous year and many of us have come to expect a Ford at the top of the list. Will this be the case once again for 2021?

Surprisingly, it’s not and thus ends Ford’s 50 year reign but which car has managed to knock Ford off its perch and ruffle the feathers at Ford?

For the past 12 years, the Ford Fiesta has taken the crown but in 2021, the Vauxhall Corsa became the nations favourite and is officially the best-selling car of 2021.

According to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), more than 40,000 Vauxhall Corsa’s were sold in 2021, of which 5,605 of those were the all-electric Corsa-e, with the rest of the figures being made up of a mixture of petrol and diesel models.

And because we all have our favourite colour of car we love to drive, what do you think was the most popular Corsa colour last year? Quartz Grey of course, followed by Jade White and Diamond Black – revealing how us Brits tend to shy away from a bit of colour!

So what make of car took the top spot as the UK’s best-selling car way back in 1971, before Ford reigned supreme for the next 50 years? It was the Austin Morris 1100/1300 that won the crown way back and since then, it’s been nothing but Ford models, including the Cortina, Escort, Focus and the winner for 12 consecutive years, the Fiesta.

After such a long reign at the top, it’s nice to see the Vauxhall Corsa at No.1 spot but which other cars completed the UK’s Top 10 best-selling list for 2021 and where did the Ford Fiesta end up finishing?

Here’s The UK’s Top 10 Best Selling Cars In 2021 (Year to Date):

1. Vauxhall Corsa – 40,914

2. Tesla Model 3 – 34,783

3. MINI – 31,792

4. Mercedes-Benz A-Cass – 30,710

5. Volkswagen Polo – 30,634

6. Volkswagen Golf – 30,240

7. Nissan Qashqai – 29,922

8. Ford Puma – 28,697

9. Kia Sportage – 27,611

10. Toyota Yaris – 27,415

As you can see, the Ford Fiesta doesn’t even appear in the Top 10 for 2021, despite it being the best-selling car in the UK for the past 12 consecutive years. However, Ford did take eighth spot with the Puma.

One of the biggest surprises of the year, was Tesla finishing in second place. Apparently, the Model 3 was outside the Top 10 in November 2021 but enjoyed a Merry December, which carried it through to take number two spot.

Volkswagen are the only manufacturer who’ve managed to take two places in the top 10, with their VW Polo (5th) and VW Golf (6th). Both these models have been firm favourites with UK drivers for many years now, so it’s no surprise to find them on the list.
