What special name would you give to your lease car and why?
According to a survey conducted by ŠKODA UK, around one-third of drivers in the UK admit to giving their car a name, with many confessing to naming their four-wheeler friend after a family member or a loved one.
The survey involved asking the question to 2,000 drivers, with 32% revealing they had named at least one of the vehicles they’d driven, whilst a quarter of those taking part admitted to naming three or more of the vehicles they’d driven so far in their lifetime.
The research carried out by ŠKODA discovered a grand total of 450 unique names that drivers had given to their vehicles. A number of names cropped up time after time and these included both male and female names that are popular baby names such as Betty, Daisy, Freddie and Rosie.
As you would imagine, some people choose a celebrity name to give their car and some of the ones chosen include Beyoncé, Elvis Presley and Harrison Ford, whilst many drivers prefer to name their car something a bit more crazy and wacky, with Beast, Bubbles, The Brussel Sprout, Ketchup and Zorro appearing as some of the more adventurous ones during the survey.
The biggest reason why Brits choose a certain name for their car is simply that it makes the driver happy and they think it’s funny (29%) – our British sense of humour at work again!
The survey also found that many drivers chose a name because they believed their car looked like a certain name (20%), whereas other drivers chose a name based on a loved one or family member (8%) or because it reminded them of a special person (10%).
So, what are the most popular car names in the UK?
Here’s the Top 10 most popular nicknames given to cars by UK drivers according to research carried out by ŠKODA UK:

- Ruby
- Rosie
- Susie
- Poppy
- Colin
- Sally
As you can see, the Top 10 is made up of a mixture of girls and boys names we hear every day. The only one that stands out as different is Herbie and could be the name someone chose for their beloved Volkswagen Beetle and perhaps Colin is a name given to a Subaru Impreza by fans of the World Rally Championship and the late, great Colin McRae.
Who’s most likely to name their car?
ŠKODA, whose in-car voice control assistant is named Laura, also discovered that it’s the female drivers of the UK that were almost twice as likely to name their car compared to male drivers, however, it’s the men who are more likely to choose the name of a loved one or relative (12%) compared to women (6%).
Apparently, those living in the West Midlands are the ones who love to show their affection the most when it comes to naming their cars (37%), whilst drivers in Scotland are less inclined (25%) and so too in Wales (25%).
The research conducted by ŠKODA UK also found that some British drivers might love their car a little too much, as 10% of motorists confessed to loving their motor more than their spouse or partner, whilst one in seven admitted to loving their car more than their parents or siblings.
“Naming a car is just one of the many ways that demonstrate the relationship we have with our cars,” said a spokesperson at ŠKODA UK.
