Almost six million drivers on our roads are aged over 70 – and the oldest is 108!
According to figures from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), the UK now has a record number of licensed drivers aged over 70.
The DVLA has revealed that more than 5.7 million people over the age of 70 hold a full, valid driving licence – an increase of 10% in just one year.
This rise is largely fuelled by the ‘Baby Boomer’ generation – those born between 1946 and 1964 – while the number of younger drivers has decreased, with the pandemic being cited as a contributing factor.

Insurance comparison website Quotezone analysed the DVLA data and found that the very oldest drivers are increasing in number at the fastest rate.
Over the past year, the number of drivers aged 90 to 99 has risen by 12%, with nearly 133,000 people in that age group still holding driving licences.
Even more impressively, the number of drivers aged 100 and over has risen by 23%. There are currently 505 centenarians with a full, valid UK driving licence – and the oldest is 108 years old!
In the UK, once a driver turns 70, they must renew their licence every three years – a DVLA requirement to ensure that any changes in health are recorded and monitored.
According to Quotezone, there’s also a potential benefit for older drivers. On average:
- Drivers aged 70–79 pay around £303 per year for insurance.
- Once they reach 80, this increases to around £436 per year – still often lower than drivers in their 50s.
Mr Greg Wilson, founder of Quotezone, suggests that older drivers can keep insurance premiums low by switching to cars with smaller engines.
“Drivers who are tempted to put younger relatives on their policy should remember that they will not only be paying more, but if the younger person does have an accident in their vehicle, as the policyholder, they could lose their no-claims bonus,” says Mr Wilson.
