Almost 6 Million Drivers on Our Roads Are Aged Over 70 and the Oldest is 108!
According to new figures from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA), the UK now has a record number of licensed drivers over 70 years of age.
The DVLA has discovered that over 5.7 million people over the age of 70 hold a full valid driving licence, which is an increase of 10% in just one year.
Apparently, the rise is fuelled by the ‘Baby Boomer’ generation – those born between 1946 and 1964, whereas the number of younger drivers has decreased, with the pandemic being blamed on the decline.
The insurance comparison website, Quotezone, analysed the DVLA data and found it was the very oldest drivers that was increasing the fastest in number.
Over the past year, the number of drivers aged between 90 and 99 has risen by 12%, with nearly 133,000 still holding driving licences.
Even more impressive, is the fact that the number of over 100 year olds still driving has climbed by 23%. There are currently 505 centenarians who hold a full valid driving licence in the UK and the oldest is 108 years of age!
Once a driver turns 70 in the UK, they must renew their licence every three years – this is a DVLA requirement. This is to make sure that any changes in health conditions are noted and recorded.
According to Quotezone, there’s an added benefit for a number of drivers over the age of 70. Based on average quotes, people aged between 70 and 79 pay around £303 a year for their insurance cover. Once they reach 80 years of age, this jumps to around £436 per year, however, this is still probably going to be lower than drivers in their 50s.
Mr Greg Wilson, founder of Quotezone, says that older drivers have many options to help keep their insurance premiums as low as possible, such as switching over to a car with a smaller engine.
“Drivers who are tempted to put younger relatives on their policy should remember that they will not only be paying more, but if the younger person does have an accident in their vehicle, as the policyholder, they could lose their no-claims bonus,” adds Mr Wilson.
