Survey suggests a cluttered boot costs you more in fuel – so maybe it’s time to clear your’s out!
It makes sense that if you fill up your car with extra weight, this will have a negative impact on fuel economy however, one third of drivers in the UK don’t seem to put the two together and continue to overload their boot with clutter.
Velcro conducted a survey recently with the help of 2,000 people and found that 27% of motorists admitted that friends and family members had made comments about how untidy their car boot was.
What was even more surprising was the fact that 12.5% of those taking part in the survey confessed to never cleaning out the boot of their car.

In 2012, a survey was carried out by Shell and the results were very similar – 32% of motorists admitted to storing more than five items in their boot. The five main items found to be left permanently in people’s car boots were; pushchairs and baby equipment, golf clubs and sports equipment, tools, outdoor clothing & wellies and numerous pairs of footwear.
This year’s survey discovered the folk from Sunderland had the most cluttered car boots in the UK, with 67% of respondents confessing that their boot was cram-packed to the top.
In stark contrast, the emptiest and cleanest car boot crown goes to the people of Warrington, in Cheshire – just 16% of respondents had a boot that was full to the brim.
If you’re guilty of having a boot absolutely piled up with clutter you might want to clean it up after we tell you that the RAC believes carrying an additional 50kg of weight could reduce fuel economy by around 2%.
Driving with a full boot on a daily basis could be costing you more in fuel than is necessary – so maybe it’s time to de-clutter that boot!
Also, carrying heavy loads in the back of your car might overload your suspension and could even increase the car’s breaking distance.
The best advice is to only take on a journey what is necessary and try to keep your car boot clutter free.
