New survey suggests that’s what most drivers think when out on the road
According to a study conducted by Moneysupermarket.com, motorists in the UK believe they’re much better drivers than those around them.
Of those taking part, 71% thought that other road users needed to scrub up on their driving skills to improve their safety on the roads but when it was time to rate how they themselves drove, the ones surveyed awarded their own driving abilities on average an eight out of 10.
Even the 35% who only gave themselves a six out of 10 or more displayed a little overconfidence, despite confessing to being involved in two or more crashes. Regardless of the fact that a large proportion of those questioned think that drivers in the UK need to brush up on their driving skills, 63% said they wouldn’t be interested themselves in taking part in the Pass Plus scheme.
Of those surveyed, over 57% said that bad weather conditions caused safety concerns, whilst 30% said that driving in the dark was an issue.
And right on topic following the new change which now allows learner drivers to take lessons on the motorway, 22% of those taking part worried about driving on them.
The actual driving test itself also showed an interesting correlation between the number of attempts trying to pass and accidents. More than half (55%) of drivers questioned didn’t pass their driving test on the first attempt. What’s even more worrying, is that those who took five or more attempts to gain a pass are 1.5 times more likely to be involved in an accident.
It tends to be younger drivers who are regarded as the worst culprits for road safety leading to high insurance premiums, but Moneysupermarket discovered that just 44% of those taking part in the survey found young drivers to be the least safe.
Thus, the 52% of 17 to 24-year-old had not been involved in any crashes, whilst around 47% of them had managed to pass their driving test on the first attempt – so it seems young drivers aren’t as bad as they’re made out to be on the roads.
And despite it now being 2018, it seems as though all is not equal amongst male and female drivers, as men are 10% more likely to be involved in an accident than women, whilst 24% of male drivers confessed to not ever feeling safe whilst behind the wheel, yet surprisingly only 11% of women said they felt the same way.
