The first sketches of the M6 (above) have emerged with testing set to begin early next year and a competitive debut expected in 2016.
The M6 GT3 will retain the 4.4-litre twin-turbo V8 of the road car rather than using the aspirated V8 currently used in the Z4.
Further changes are expected to include an optimised chassis, a new motorsport-spec gearbox, ABS system and electronics. The M6 GT3 is also expected to make use of lightweight material as part of a strategy to reduce the size of the car. Inside the cabin, expect leather seats to be replaced by one racing bucket,
Speaking about the new M6, BMW Motorsport boss Jens Marquardt said: “For me, as BMW Motorsport director, there are few things more exciting than the development of a completely new car like the BMW M6 GT3.
“This car’s properties make it predestined to succeed the BMW Z4 GT3.”
