The first images of the eagerly anticipated BMW 3 series Plug-in Hybrid have surfaced.
The prototype, which is expected to be released in the summer, was spotted as it was put through its paces as part of cold weather testing in Scandinavia.
Photographs shows that the prototype hybrid is similar in style to the 3 series with which we are all familiar, with the charging socket discreetly positioned as part of the design on the side of the car.
Details are yet to be confirmed, but the model is expected to utilise the four-cylinder based drivetrain used in the BMW X5 eDrive Plug-in Hybrid, in conjunction with a 95bhp power electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack.
The car will offer two driving modes, EcoPro mode and hold mode, which BMW say will provide “intelligent hybrid functionality, whereby the energy management system tailors the interplay of combustion engine and electric drive system to most efficient effect.”
It is expected that, when released, the model will offer in excess of 80 mpg with CO2 emissions below 90g/km, and be capable of reaching 60mph in around 7 seconds with a top speed of 75 mph.
There is also speculation that the when in hold mode the car will have an “all-electric” range of 20 miles, although no official announcement has been made
