New Aston Martin production plant to go ahead in south Wales
Aston Martin has announced that it is to build a new production plant in south Wales where the brand’s new luxury DBX car will be made, creating over 750 skilled jobs.
The marque’s new DBX model will be hand-made in the Ministry of Defence’s Red Dragon super hangar building located in St Athan in the Vale of Glamorgan and which cost the government £113m to build. Work to transform the site into a state-of-the-art production plant will begin in 2017.

The Welsh Government has been fighting for the opportunity to host the prestigious automaker on Welsh turf for three years. It has gone up against opponents from the Middle East, North America and Coventry, but Wales successfully scooped the lucrative contract, which is said to be worth hundreds of millions of pounds.
The luxury DBX 4×4 crossover will cost in the region of £150,000 to £200,000 and according to Aston Martin’s chief executive, Andy Palmer, each car will require 200 hours of craftsmanship. Vehicle production in the new factory will begin in three years time and it is thought that 750 highly-skilled jobs will be created.
As a result of the new deal, Aston Martin will also increase production at its Warwickshire plant, which will also create another 250 new jobs.
Mr Palmer told the BBC that the offer from the Welsh Government was “the best offer” but not simply in monetary terms. He added: “What really swung it was the passion and the professionalism of the people we dealt with in Wales”.
