The Ins and Outs of the Practical Driving Test from Flexed.co.uk
A couple of weeks ago here at Flexed, we discussed details regarding taking and passing your Theory Driving Test, which all learner drivers have to pass before moving on to the Practical Test.
Once the theory test has been taken and you’ve come away with a pass and a certificate, the most nerve-racking part of the whole learning process is next – the practical test.
To ensure you pass your practical driving test, you must be able to drive safely on different kinds of roads and in specific traffic conditions and be fully understanding of the Highway Code.

You can book and take a test as soon as you feel confident enough on the roads to pass, so the amount of lessons you have beforehand is up to you.
On the day of your practical driving test you must take your UK driving licence with you, as well as your theory test pass certificate.
If you forget to take any of the above with you, the test could be cancelled and no refund given.
Most people use their driving instructor’s car to take the test but you can use your own vehicle so long as it meets the criteria.
You can take someone with you on your test, who will sit in the back of the car but they must be over 16 years of age.
The driving test consists of five parts:
1. Eyesight check
2. Vehicle Safety Questions – ‘Show Me, Tell Me’
3. General Driving Ability
4. Reversing
5. Independent Driving
The test will last for around 40 minutes and is the same for both manual and automatic vehicles.
If you make a mistake during the test, as long as it isn’t serious you will be able to carry on and it may not affect the final result. However, if the examiner believes your driving is a danger to others on the road, the test could be stopped.
You will pass your test if you manage to make no more than 15 minor driving faults and no major faults. The examiner will go through all the faults you made and provide you with a pass certificate.
You will be asked if you want your full driving licence sent to you automatically and if so, you must hand over your provisional licence.
Once you’ve received that all important pass certificate, the world’s your oyster – immediately. You don’t even have to wait for your full driving licence to come through the post!
If however, you fail the test, the examiner will go through all the faults you made and you can book another practical test but you will have to pay again and wait at least 10 working days before re-booking.
