One car is built every 16 seconds in the UK!
New figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), have revealed that 2016 is set to be a record year once more for car manufacturers in the UK, with a vehicle coming off the production line every 16 seconds.
Overall figures for the first quarter of 2016 saw a rise of 10.3 per cent on the previous year.
However, the chief executive of SMMT, Mike Hawes, said more still needs to be done to even come close to the all-time vehicle manufacturing record which was set in 1972, when 1.9 million domestic vehicles rolled off the production line.
Last year saw the highest number of cars being made for a decade, with a total of 1,587,677 but this figure is still a long way from the the record set in 1972.
Mr Hawes believes that in order to break the old 1972 record, at least 38,000 more jobs need to be created throughout the auto manufacturing sector, with a good percentage of the jobs preferably going to the supply side, both of which would help with high production demands.
Encouragingly, Wales secured a £240 million investment for the automotive sector during the first quarter of 2016, which will go towards the creation of 1,000 jobs.
Aston Martin has recently revealed that they are to build a new £200 million factory in Glamorgan to make its brand new DBX crossover, and the comeback of TVR depends on its all new £30 million sports car facility, in the Ebbw Vale Enterprise Zone.
Additionally, a £7 million agreement by Toyota to make its next generation hybrid engines in Deeside has helped secure over 1,000 jobs between them all.
