Will You Be Flying The England Flag From Your Car During Euro 2021?

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 If So, Please Understand The Rules To Avoid Being Fined Up To £1,000!

The Euro 2020 Tournament was cancelled because of Covid-19 and postponed for a year but today (June 11) is when the big event finally gets underway, with the first match kicking off between Turkey and Italy tonight at 8:00pm.

As for England, their first match is set for 14:00 this Sunday (June 13), playing against Croatia, which excited football fans in the UK will be watching either at home or in their local pub now that lockdown has eased. And of course, to show our support, many of us have started to fly the England flag from our homes, places of work and even our cars.

If you’re planning on supporting England during Euro 2021 by flying flags from your car or van windows, you can do as there’s no law against it but there are guidelines that you must follow in order to avoid being handed a hefty fine!

FLEXED - short term car leases

Come on England!

Firstly, the flag must not be positioned anywhere on your vehicle that could obstruct the drivers field of vision or any other driver’s vision on the road. Secondly, it must be secured correctly so that it won’t come off and cause damage or injury, otherwise it could be classed as an insecure load.

Thirdly, think about the size of the flag you intend to fly from your car or van. A normal flag is around the same size as an A4 piece of paper and this tends not to be an issue but obviously, the bigger the flag the more chances there are for problems to occur.

The last point to consider is what would happen if your vehicle was to collide with someone whilst carrying a mascot/emblem – could it strike them and cause injury? If the mascot you are carrying is not likely to cause injury to anyone because it may bend, retract or detach itself from the vehicle, then no offence would be committed.

So, to avoid being handed a fine of up to £1,000 during the delayed Euro 2020 tournament, we advise all football fans adhere to these rules. The driver of any vehicle must have a full view of the road and traffic ahead at all times.

Before mounting any kind of mascot to your car or van you should be aware of the following:

Regulation 53 Road Vehicles (Construction and Use) Regulations 1986 states: “No mascot, emblem or other ornamental object shall be carried by a motor vehicle first used on or after 1 October 1937 in any position where it is likely to strike any person with whom the vehicle may collide unless the mascot is not liable to cause injury to such person by reason of any projection thereon.”

Most England flags that are on sale are perfectly legal but MUST be fitted correctly to your vehicle before driving anywhere. You must make sure that it doesn’t pose a risk to you or anyone else.
