Warning to motorists about car insurance after Hurricane Ophelia

Drivers need to make sure their vehicle is covered for storm damage

Hurricane Ophelia has caused havoc here in the UK, with 70mph winds reported for south-west Scotland and north-west England and now drivers are being warned to check their car insurance following the events of the past few days to ensure their vehicle is covered for storm damage.
Whilst Hurricane Ophelia has now been downgraded to a post-tropical cyclone, the Deputy Head of Forecasting at Met Eireann is still warning people in the UK about the dangerous conditions such weather can cause.
Motorists are being warned to check their car insurance policy to look at whether their vehicle is covered for storm damage or not.

Many insurance policies do fully cover motorists but with so many different types to choose from, some drivers could end up paying a huge bill if damage is caused to their car because of the hurricane and if you’re deemed not to be protecting your car enough, the blame could be pinned on you as the owner and driver.
Product expert from comparethemarket.com, Kris Jones, has issued a warning to motorists in the UK to check their policy immediately to ensure they are covered for storm damage.
“While many comprehensive insurance policies include windscreen and flood damage, two likely incidents in the event of a heavy storm, this isn’t guaranteed,” said Mr Jones.
Cars insured under a third party, fire and theft policy might not be covered for such an occurrence, as they usually only cover damage caused to other vehicles and property.
Drivers are being advised to not only check their premium to see what protection they have but to make sure they protect their vehicle as best they can to help reduce the chance of blame.
If you drive through flood water created by a storm this could be regarded as you not taking enough care of your vehicle, possibly resulting in your claim being refused.
During bad weather, it’s important that drivers carry out sufficient measures to protect their vehicle, so if the worst happens you can prove that any damage was caused by the storm alone.
