On Match 8, Volkswagen celebrated the first production of the special ‘Bullis’ Camper Van
Volkswagen is celebrating the 60 year anniversary of its legendary ‘Bullis’ Camper Van which the company began producing on March 8, 1956, sparking a new era for the automotive industry.
The production of the iconic Camper Van began in Volkswagen’s newly-built automotive plant in Hannover, which had been constructed from the ground up in under a year and was, at that time, the largest manufacturing factory in Europe.
Volkswagen Transporter
At the beginning in 1956, VW employed 4,000 workers in its new factory, including 25 women, who were producing 230 Transporter vans per day.
The current VW Chairman of the Board of Management, Dr. Eckhard Scholz, said the workforce at the Hannover plant, (both past and present) manufactured the Transporter “with pride and passion, and with love for this unique auto vehicle”.
Thomas Zwiebler, Chairman of the Works Council of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, believes that the Hannover production plant “lay the groundwork for a unique success story” and led the way to employing tens of thousands of people “over decades” to develop an “essential pillar of the company”.
The production of the the first generation Transporter ended in 1967. In that time more than 1.8 million VW Camper Vans had been manufactured by the Hannover team. However, production did not stop there; new models were developed and to this day, around 12 million VW Transporters have been manufactured.
