The new ’67’ number plate will be available from September 1
Twice a year it’s the job of DVLA censors to gather together and decide which number plates could be deemed as rude or offensive and not for human eyes.
The new ’67’ number plate is due for release on September 1 and it’s up to the DVLA to decide which mix of letters and numbers could create something that could be deemed rude, silly or offensive and therefore needs banning from being able to be used.
Every year, the DVLA releases a full list of banned number plates and it does make for amusing reading, normally including a collection of rude ones which are always good for a laugh but the list also contains some which could be seen as offensive for political, racial or religious reasons.

With the new September 2017 registration plate ready to change to ’67’ on the first of the month, many a dodgy sequence can be created including ‘BA67 ARD’, ‘OR67 ASM’, ‘DO67 GER’ and ‘DO67 SHT’, none of which will see the light of day!
According to the DVLA, the full list of banned number plates containing the upcoming ’67’ fills ten pages.
One of their spokeswomen said: “There’s nothing scientific about it – it’s all done by taste, and if some slip through the net and we get a complaint, we take the feedback on board.”
Once a dodgy number plate makes it to the list it stays banned forever, so rude and offensive plates such as ‘CR16 PLE’ and ‘VA61 ANA’ will never be allowed on the front and back of any vehicle.
If one happens to go unnoticed by the DVLA and is seen on the road and reported by a member of public, they do have the power to take that offending number plate off the driver.
Any mix of numbers and letters that could potentially make a word that is deemed as racist, political, religiously offensive or drug related will also be banned by the DVLA, plates such as ’15 LAM’, ‘OS55 AMA’, ‘AD13 CTS’ and ‘JE55 US’ have all been banned for these reasons, even number plates ending in BNP are out of the question.
And those motorists who choose to stick a personalised registration on their vehicle will not get away with any kind of rude or offensive plate, as the DVLA have the power to say no to these too.
