Latest figures reveal nearly 60,000 electric or plug-in cars have been registered in the UK
Sales for electric cars are continuing to grow across the UK and the latest figures reveal that nearly 60,000 electric or plug-in vehicles have been registered.
Almost one-third of sales are for the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV but a wide range of different models are now available on the market.
There were 19,945 plug-in hybrid electric Mitsubishi Outlanderās registered before April 2016, according to figures from DVLA, which have been analysed by the RAC Foundation. The Outlander has out-sold the number two top selling electric or plug-in car, the Nissan Leaf, by over 7,000.
Electric cars on the rise across the UK
However, the Nissan Leaf remains the best selling battery-electric car in the UK, with sales up to the same time period of 12,469.
The Nissan Leaf has an electric-only drivetrain, while the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV comes with a 2.0 litre, four-cylinder petrol engine, in addition to the batteries and electric motor.
The BMW i3 came third, with over 4,500 registrations up until April 2016. The BMW i3 has a choice of two drivetrains, allowing owners to choose which spec to go for.
To date, there are 58,469 electric or plug-in cars registered in the UK, a figure that has grown by 10,549 since the end of last year.
Competition is fierce and Mitsubishi now have to keep their eyes on Mercedes-Benz and Volvo, who have been recognised as delivering the two cars with the greatest growth in sales.
Sales for the Volvo XC90 T8 Twin Engine plug-in hybrid have grown by 1,400% over the last year and the Mercedes-Benz C350 e, has seen a rise in sales of 200%.
