American auto firm unveils new Model 3 as it attempts to enter the auto car mass market
Tesla Motors chief executive Elon Musk has unveiled the marque’s newest addition to the family in Los Angeles; a lower cost electric model, based on the firm’s Model S which has base price tag of $76,000.
According to reports, the new Tesla Model 3 has been met with significant approval and a encouraging level of interest, with over 250,000 pre-orders already registered, resulting in Mr Musk tweeting that the company will definitely “need to rethink production planning”.
The Model 3 will go on sale for $35,000 (approximately £25k) at the end of 2017. This is half the cost of the auto brand’s Model S and Model X SUV, as Tesla hope to break out into the mass market. This new venture will be a tough test for the American auto manufacturer, which delivered just over 50,000 vehicles in 2015.
The five-seater Tesla Model 3 can travel 215 miles on a full charge. This is not as far as the other models but an improvement on its competitors, including the Nissan Leaf and the BMW i3, which can manage around half this distance.
The electric car also comes complete with a state-of-the-art touchscreen display, groundbreaking Tesla Autopilot self-driving technology, and can boast 0-60mph in six seconds. The stylish car does not look like a typical electric vehicle, with its panoramic windshield stretching to the roof and its curvaceous lines.
