The new emissions video released by SMMT is designed to remove motorists’ “confusion”
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has released a short animated video to “reassure and inform motorists” that the car industry is committed to “improving air quality and reducing emissions” following the Volkswagen emissions scandal in 2015.
The promotional video was released by SMMT on February 25 ahead of this year’s Geneva International Motor Show, which is to take place in March and will provide an opportunity for auto manufacturers to show off the latest advances in ultra-low emission vehicles, including hydrogen and hybrid cars.
AirQualityNews.com reported that the video has been met with resounding scoffs from leading figures in the fight against air pollution, including green law firm ClientEarth which said the video was “laughable”, and NGO Transport & Environment who called it a “marketing gimmick”.
However, SMMT, whose members include Volkswagen Group UK, BMW UK, Vauxhall and Jaguar Land Rover, to name just a small few, said that the video is designed to settle the confusion surrounding emissions testing within the car industry. The trade association said that the “widespread confusion” could result in motorists dismissing the latest low emission cars, which its says are the “cleanest in history”.
Following last year’s embarrassing emissions scandal, the European Council approved the introduction of new emissions testing in member states. The new tests will be implemented by September 2017 and will follow the real driving emissions (RDE) procedure; meaning cars will be tested on real roads rather than in laboratories.
