And one motoring organisation believes new drivers should be taught road manners
The controversial new driving test came into effect across the UK yesterday (4 December).
On the same day, we saw a number of examiners go out on 48-hour strike in protest against the changes, believing they’ll be working longer hours for no extra pay, whilst many also think some of the newly updated reversing manoeuvres could be dangerous.
Amongst changes made to the UK driving test is the addition of a sat nav section. The examiner will provide the use of a sat nav device for the candidate and choose a destination for them to follow.

However, one motoring organisation in the UK believes that learner drivers should also be tested on how to treat other road users.
According to GEM Motoring Assist, the newly revised test is about dealing with today’s modern motoring but “represents a missed opportunity for making the roads safer”.
The road safety and breakdown recovery company would like to see learner drivers being taught how to better treat other road users so as to avoid conflict, as well as how to cope with stressful journeys.
Neil Worth, road safety officer at GEM, says that pretty much anyone can learn how to follow a sat nav or parallel park and feels disappointed that no revisions have been made to the driving test that deal with how to treat other road users.
“We believe a key component to a lifetime of safe driving is attitude, and in particular how to treat fellow road users,” said Mr Worth.
