Welsh government grant £700,000 to new Toyota production facility
Toyota has said it will be investing £7m into the creation of a new production facility at its Deeside plant as the leading automotive firm announces a new hybrid engine.
The Welsh government has also pledged £700,000 to fund the production facility which will create hundreds of jobs within the automotive industry. The Toyota Deeside plant, situated in Flintshire, currently employs 540 people who produce 13 different types of petrol and hybrid petrol engines for the company’s Auris model, which are manufactured in Derbyshire.

The new 1.8 litre hybrid engines, which are to be made up of 329 separate parts, will be painstakingly produced in the Deeside plant and then shipped to Turkey, where they will form part of a new innovative Toyota model.
Toyota experienced a impressive sales year in 2015, retaining for the fourth year the title of best-selling car manufacturer in the world. The automotive firm sold a staggering 10.15 million vehicles last year. Sales of Toyota’s hybrid cars grew by 17% compared to the previous year, which explains the company’s £7m investment in the new hybrid engine.
Edwina Hart, Minister for Economy, Science and Transport, commented: “It will not only provide a platform for growth in what is an extremely competitive market but will help secure the long term sustainable future of the plant and safeguard skilled, well-paid jobs in the region.”
The automotive part manufacturing industry in Wales is experiencing strong growth, as other manufacturing plants based in the country, beside Toyota Deeside, secure investment. Figures suggest that the industry, which employs over 18,000 people in Wales, creates £3.3bn for the economy.
