SMMT finds that over half of modern cars are fitted with advanced autonomous technology
The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) has found that more than half of the new vehicles appearing on the market feature advanced self-driving technology.
The study carried out by SMMT and JATO Dynamics suggests that the self-driving revolution is already upon us. According to the findings, 58.1% of new vehicles registered in 2015 were equipped with a collision warning system. This advanced feature monitors the road ahead and warns the driver if it notices an impending collision.
Perhaps one of the most useful autonomous features is the automatic emergency braking system, which will automatically apply the brakes of your car if the collision monitoring system notices an obstacle ahead. This potentially life-saving feature was fitted into 39% of new vehicles registered in 2015.
Other useful autonomous technology already benefitting modern motorists, includes blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise control. The former was fitted on over 33% of new cars in 2015, while the latter was fitted on 31.7% of new cars in the same year.
All of these autonomous technologies have experienced an overwhelming increase in popularity within the previous couple of years. SMMT believe the advanced features will help to make the roads a safer place, claiming that the technology will prevent 25,000 collisions and save 2,500 lives by 2030.
Mike Hawes, chief executive of the SMMT, commented: āFully driverless cars are still a long way off from everyday use, but this data shows advanced autonomous technology is already making its way into the majority of new cars.ā
