In the financial year 2016/17, local councils in England made £1,582billion from fees, parking fines and permits. They used £763million for the running of their parking operations which left an excess of £819million to be put back into the running of transport.

The record figure forms part of an upward trend which has seen profits gained from parking rise from £587million during the 2012/13 financial year and £744million in 2015/16.
The £819million figure from the 2016/17 financial year shows a 10% rise compared to the previous year and a 40% jump in comparison to 2012/13.
The highest-ranked council was Westminster, who raked in a surplus of over £73million, whilst a total of 33 London boroughs made £379million between them all during the last financial year.
Brighton and Hove council made £21million, whilst Birmingham and Milton Keynes both raked in £11.1million.
Despite record figures, not every councils’ parking operations managed to make a profit as 46 local councils reported weak figures.
According to the RAC who carried out the analysis, local residents should reap the benefits of such record figures, with the money made from council parking operations being spent on improving transport around their local areas.
The record figures, says Steve Gooding director of the RAC Foundation, echoes “record number of cars and volume of traffic” and added that the “silver lining” for drivers in England was that any money generated from parking operations, “must almost exclusively be ploughed back into transport.”
