Drivers in the UK urged by DVLA to test their eyesight

Survey found many motorists are unaware of what the minimum standards required for a licence are

The DVLA is urging drivers in the UK to have their eyes tested following the results of a survey which found that 50% of motorists are unaware of the minimum standards required for a British driving licence.

All drivers in the UK must be able to read a vehicle’s number plate from 20m (65ft) away.

However, the survey conducted by the DVLA discovered that only half of UK drivers had any idea about the eye test and regularly used it to self-check, which motorists in the UK are legally supposed to do.

According to a DVLA doctor, anyone who doesn’t pass the test should go and see an optician.

Nowadays, learner drivers need to pass an eye test as part of their practical exam and should legally ensure afterwards that their eyesight continues to be good enough to stay behind the wheel.

Wyn Parry from the DVLA, warns UK drivers that vision can “naturally deteriorate over time” and that regular checks to make sure your eyesight is still good were “essential for safe driving”.

An eye test doesn’t take very long and is available on most high streets up and down the country.

The 20m distance is essentially five car lengths, so drivers in the UK are being urged to use the measure to check their vision on the registration plates of cars passing by.

According to the DVLA, there are 48 million registered drivers in the UK.

In 2017, the Association of Optometrists requested that drivers should be made to have compulsory eye tests every 10 years, as one in three optometrists claimed they’d been visited by a patient who still drove despite being below the legal standard.

Drivers aged 70 or over have to declare every three years that they’re still okay to be on the road but don’t need to take a test to prove they are.
