There’s nothing better than listening to music whilst on the move, especially on a long journey when the sound of sweet tunes in your ears can help pass the time and make the trip feel a little less boring.
However, whilst it’s totally legal to listen to music whilst driving, cranking up the volume too high might land you in trouble with the law.
If you’re caught listening to music that’s too loud you could be issued with a £100 fine and three penalty points but why, what’s so bad about listening to your favourite songs whilst out on the road cranked up to the max?

It seems listening to loud music in your vehicle is a punishable offence despite the fact that police officers have no power to pull over a driver for doing so, however if they believe the loud music is causing a distraction to the driver, they can penalise the motorist with a fine and points on their licence.
And if you play loud music in your vehicle whilst parked up, local authorities have the power to be able to issue the driver with a noise abatement notice, especially if the music is causing a disturbance to neighbours.
If a driver ignores a police officer’s warning to turn down the volume their vehicle could be seized.
“Listening to some music can be good, even beneficial and calming, but listening to loud music in your car can be incredibly distracting and some need to turn it off when concentrating on a manoeuvre such as parking,” said Rebecca Ashton, head of driver behaviour at IAM RoadSmart.
Listening to music that’s too loud whilst driving could stop you from hearing other things around you, whilst hearing a song on the radio that you aren’t too keen on may cause stress and have a negative impact on your driving.
“The main thing to remember is a human brain can only truly concentrate on one thing at a time and listening to very loud music can be distracting,” added Rebecca.
