The Apple electric iCar believed to be ready for market by 2020
The German newspaper, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, has reported that Apple has brought together a group of automotive experts in Berlin to help work on and develop its electric ‘iCar’ and possibly to go on to build the new electric vehicle with Magna Steyr, in Austria.
The newly established group, which consists of around 15 to 20 ‘progressive’ masterminds from Germany’s automotive industry, are believed to be working on the iCar’s engineering, hardware and software and that the vehicle is expected to be ready for the car market by 2020, according to informed sources.
As reported by the Automotive News, Europe’s European vehicle assembly plant map, contract manufacturer Magna Steyr, builds vehicles for Peugeot, BMW’s Mini collection and Mercedes-Benz and will be able to accommodate Apple due to the production of two of BMW’s Mini models being phased out.
Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung has reported that Apple proposes to launch the iCar into the rental market at first, or possibly car-sharing programmes, due to the company having no dealership structure or service facilities in place but hope that the iCar will be available to the self-driving market at a later date.
Last year, the Wall Street Journal reported that 600 staff from Apple are working on the EV, nicknamed ‘Project Titan’ and this number could eventually triple.
Apple, which has never confirmed its plans on building cars, told the newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, that “the company doesn’t comment on rumours or speculation, including on the subject of the iCar.”
