Grey Retains Top Spot for the Second Year in a Row!
Every year is revealed what the nations favourite car colour of choice is and last year was the turn of grey, taking the crown once again after beating all the colours of the rainbow to top spot, having taken the title in 2018 for the first time ever.
The number of grey cars registered here in the UK has increased by 5.3% year-on-year in 2019 to 521,273 – this equates to 22.6% of all new cars registered last year being painted in grey.
The title in 2017 was held by black but lost out the following year to grey and once again in 2019, finishing runner up with 466,756 registrations.
The figures come from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), who also revealed that white completed the top three with 414,403 registrations. According to SMMT figures, registrations of cars in both of these colours decreased year-on-year by 2.4% (black) and 4.1% (white).
What these top three results tell us, is that an astonishing 60.7% of all new cars registered last year in the UK were monochrome in colour. Does this mean we’ve become a nation of driver’s who lean more towards the ‘safe’ colour options rather than going for something a little brighter and if so, why is that?
Of course, we still have a bit of colour in the Top 10 list but many of them are ones that appear in a beautiful rainbow such as red, blue, green, yellow and orange, with the other two places being filled by silver and bronze – no sign of any pink or purple which are both beautiful bright colours and deserve to be seen a lot more on our roads.
Maybe we stay away from brighter colours because we don’t like to stand out in a crowd or perhaps it’s just that certain colours suit a car more than another or it could simply be that many of us have a favourite colour that we can’t break away from. Whatever the reason for our reluctance to choose a lovely lilac or fuchsia pink over a ‘safe’ monochrome colour, grey was last years winner and it’ll be interesting to see whether it can make it three years in a row when this year’s favourite colour is revealed in January 2021!
Even sunshine yellow only just managed to grab last place in 2019 – a position held by boring beige the year before!
One bright colour that did do well in 2019 was turquoise, managing to gain a 29.3% increase year-on-year, however this only equates to 2,358 registrations.
Silver didn’t fare so well last year, only managing sixth place overall despite it appearing in the top three 16 times during the last 20 years – just 201,008 registrations.
Grey was the nations favourite car colour across every region apart from Scotland and the Channel Islands, where white grabbed top spot.
The three least popular colours across the whole of the UK were maroon, pink and cream.
When you bring class of car into the mix, small cars were most likely to be white, whereas executive saloons tended to be black, whilst the most popular colour for an electric car was white.

Top 10 Car Colours in 2019:
The following data from the SMMT, shows just how much more conservative we’ve become in our choice of car colour, as 20 years ago the top spot was taken by the colour blue, with red in third place and green in fourth. Jump forward 10 years to 2009 and blue has slipped back down to third place, with red in fifth and green not even featuring in the top five!
And whilst blue and red still feature in the top five in 2019, they’ve been beaten by three monochrome colours – grey, black and white, the latter of which doesn’t appear in either the 1999 top five or the 2009 top five at all!
