Volvo aims to sell 1m electric cars by 2025

Swedish auto manufacturer is committed to an electric future

The chief executive and president of Volvo Cars, Håkan Samuelsson, has announced that the auto firm is aiming to sell 1 million electric vehicles by 2025.
Mr Samuelsson said that the Swedish auto manufacturer will release its first all-electric car in 2019, but that its current models will be available with hybrid technology as soon as possible.
Volvo has developed two new vehicle architectures for its larger and smaller cars; the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA) and the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA). Both have been designed with safety in mind and both can be used with hybrid or all-electric technology.
The new SPA and CMA architectures are part of Volvo’s commitment to a future when no one will suffer fatal injuries in a new Volvo vehicle in the case of a road traffic collision.
The auto firm will soon be releasing its 60 series and 90 series models using its new SPA, and a range of smaller vehicles which will be built using CMA and which will be available with electric technology.
The “deliberately ambitious target” is part of Volvo’s new sustainable business plan as the firm recognises its environmental responsibility and commits to a climate neutral business model by 2025. The auto firm is also committed to employing more woman within management positions; with a target of 35 per cent by 2020.
Mr Samuelsson commented: “Sustainability is nothing new or something that sits outside our operations, it is something that forms an integral part of everything we do. It is simply our way of operating.”
