The last days of the old £1 coin are upon us…

and one of the thirty million still in circulation could be sitting in your car!

There’s just a couple of days left to spend your old £1 coins as they stop being legal tender after October 15.

People up and down the country will be looking down the sofa and checking coat pockets to see if they’ve still got a couple of the old round edged coins left to spend before the deadline but according to the experts, there’s one place that many of us might not think to check but definitely need to… inside your vehicle!

The AA claims there might be around £30 million in old £1 coins lurking on the floors and under seats in cars and vans all over the country, so with only a few days left before they become unable to be spent, it’s time to get inside our vehicles and check down the seats, in the glove box and door pockets before it’s too late.

The last days of the old £1 coin are upon us… and one of the thirty million still in circulation could be sitting in your car!

The British motoring association made their estimation based on a hunch that each car in the country probably has at least one old £1 coin lurking around in it somewhere.

The AA believes that many motorists will still have a couple of the old £1 coins on their person, as they come in handy for shopping trolleys, tolls and parking, with a large number of pay-and-display machines not yet converted to allow for the new £1 coin, which became legal tender back in March this year.

Car owners up and down the country are being advised to do a last minute check on the inside of their car; looking under floor mats, down seats, inside the glove box, cup holders and even the ash tray.

The Royal Mint believe there’s around 500 million old £1 coins still in circulation across the UK.

President of the AA Edmund King, has speculated that a large number of these ’round pounds’ are lying undiscovered in people’s cars.

“We estimate that most cars will have some loose change lurking in hidden places,” said Mr King.

If however you miss this Sunday’s deadline there’s no need to panic, as most major banks and Post Office’s will carry on accepting the old £1 coin after October 15.
