What is personal car leasing?

Personal car leasing allows you as a consumer to drive a new car (usually under 12 months old) for a fixed monthly fee, instead of buying a vehicle outright.

You agree a term length and annual mileage with the leasing provider and then make monthly payments to use the vehicle. At the end of the contract, the car is normally returned to the leasing company, subject to agreed mileage and fair wear and tear on the vehicle. You only pay for the car’s use during the lease term, making it a predictable and hassle-free way to drive a new model without the long-term commitment of ownership.

Car leasing offers a number of advantages, from flexibility and lower initial and ongoing payments to minimal depreciation concerns and the ability to drive the latest vehicles. Read on to find out how leasing works, and what the benefits are to you as a motorist.

How it works

When you take out a personal car lease with Flexed, you’ll go through the following easy and convenient process:

Hidden

Due to the big savings and age of our Outlet vehicles, delivery and collection aren’t available nationwide. But don’t worry — you’ll get a full handover and walkthrough when you collect your car directly from us in York.

Step One: Choosing a vehicle

You can browse the many options for your lease car on our website, and when you’ve found one that you would like simply click on ‘request a quote’ and fill out the 5-minute form to get a quote from our friendly team. If you would prefer, you can also give them a call on 0800 311 8290.

Step Two: Setting up the lease arrangement

The terms of your lease includes:

  • Your finance option
  • How long you’ll have the vehicle (between 28 days and 12 months)
  • How much your initial payment will be
  • The monthly payments you will pay more for more luxurious vehicles
  • Your mileage-please bear in mind that going over your agreed mileage allowance may incur additional charges.

You may also wish to discuss what else is included (for example, road tax) during the consultation process. At Flexed, we provide the Manufacturer warranty, Road tax, and Breakdown cover with Roadside assistance all as part of your lease.

Step Three: Initial payment and insurance

Next, you simply make the initial payment and arrange insurance (which we can help you with) and with this step done you’re nearly there!

Final step: Drive Away!

Finally, all you’ll need to do is either pick up your lease car or arrange delivery, and you’ll be off and running!

Once you’ve completed the initial setup process, you’ll just need to continue to make the monthly payments and keep your car in good condition for the duration of the lease.

Returning the vehicle

When your contract ends and you return the vehicle, you’ll need to hand the keys back and complete some additional paperwork, and the vehicle will be inspected for any excessive wear and tear or damage-you may need to pay additional charges if the car is not in an acceptable condition when you return it.

Key Benefits

The benefits of personal leasing

Less upfront cost

Because leasing payments work on a monthly basis, you won’t have to find a large lump sum at the beginning to purchase the vehicle-which is much easier on your budget, and gives you much more freedom with your finances.

Lower Monthly Payments

Monthly costs for personal car leasing tend to be lower than for traditional financing agreements, because you’re only paying for the depreciation rather than the full purchase price-making budgeting easier and giving you more options.

New vehicles

Lease vehicles are always either new or nearly new, meaning that you get to benefit from modern safety features, fuel economy, and technology every time.

High flexibility

Car leasing is a very flexible way to do your motoring with no long-term commitments. The ability to change vehicle is very helpful for those who need to upgrade or change their motor due to circumstances. Combined with the ability to cancel the contract and return the car rather than have to sell, this makes leasing an easy to use car financing option.

No depreciation or resale hassles

When a car is leased the depreciation risk is taken on by the leasing company, meaning that you won’t have to worry about losing money on depreciation at the end of the lease. Because the car is taken back at the end, you won’t have to worry about selling it on either.

A simpler way to budget

As we’ll discuss in the next section, when you take out a car lease with any leasing provider (but especially with Flexed, not that we’re biased!) you’ll receive plenty of items such as the tax and warranty included with the lease, making life simpler for you.

Why Flexed?

Conventional car leasing arrangements have earned a reputation that lumps them in with gym memberships-they’re inflexible contracts that resist modifications or early termination, leaving customers frustrated and out of pocket.

That’s why we created Flexed in 2013-a flexible car leasing solution designed differently. Starting with just a 28-day minimum commitment, you’re free to cancel, exchange, or upgrade your vehicle whenever you want, without hidden fees or penalties.

We’ve grown significantly since then, going from a small fleet of 300 vehicles to over 2,000 expertly maintained cars today, all of which are available to our customers.

Eligibility

There are a number of factors that determine whether you are eligible or not for a personal car lease in the UK, although many UK adults will qualify. The full list of requirements for personal leasing is as follows:

  • You must hold a full and valid UK driver’s licence
You must be able to afford all of the regular monthly payments, and therefore having a regular income is a must.
  • You’ll also need a minimum of 3 years’ worth of address history, as well as evidence of 3 years of either employment, education or retirement history.
  • Your credit application will also need to be successful. It’s important to note that at Flexed, we assess customers on an individual basis. If you have a bad credit history, then it may still possible to lease a car with us if your other circumstances are suitable.

There are additionally requirements relating to your legal financial status-you should not have been declared bankrupt, or have an IVA (individual voluntary arrangement) or a CJJ (county court judgment) against your name when you apply for a lease.

FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions

Hidden

Due to the big savings and age of our Outlet vehicles, delivery and collection aren’t available nationwide. But don’t worry — you’ll get a full handover and walkthrough when you collect your car directly from us in York.

What length of lease can I have?

At Flexed, we specialise in shorter-term leases of between 28 days and 12 months, and we pull out all the stops to make the process as flexible as possible for you.

What happens when my personal car lease ends?

When a personal car lease ends, the vehicle is normally returned to the leasing company. It will usually be inspected for mileage and condition against the contract’s fair wear and tear standards. Any excess mileage or damage outside those standards may result in additional charges. You do not normally own the vehicle at the end of a Personal lease agreement, so there is generally no final purchase payment to make.

Does your personal car leasing include insurance?

Please see our FAQ page for details on how insurance works with our personal car leases.

What is fair wear and tear on a leased car?

Fair wear and tear refers to reasonable deterioration that occurs through normal use of a vehicle during its lease. It can include minor marks or wear consistent with the car’s age, mileage and condition. Damage that goes beyond reasonable use may lead to charges when the vehicle is returned. Leasing providers generally assess condition using industry guidance, so checking the relevant standards before the end of your contract can help you understand what to expect.

What happens if I exceed the agreed mileage on my lease?

Exceeding your agreed mileage will result in excess mileage charges at the end of your lease. These are calculated per mile over the limit and can add significant costs. Always estimate your annual mileage carefully when setting up the lease. If you’re unsure, it’s better to choose a higher mileage allowance upfront to avoid unexpected fees.

Is gap insurance necessary when leasing a car?

GAP (Guaranteed Asset Protection) insurance isn’t mandatory, but it is highly recommended. It covers the difference between your car’s value and what you owe if it’s written off or stolen. Gap insurance provides peace of mind by ensuring you’re not left paying for a car you no longer have.

Can I modify or personalise a leased car?

We have been asked this by a number of customers; the short answer is that certain modifications such as tow bars, roof racks and easy-to-remove decals may be permissible within the terms of your lease. However, please be aware that your warranty may be invalidated and you will need to remove the modifications at the end of the lease with no damage to the vehicle. You will also need permission from your finance provider before any modifications are carried out. We would recommend talking to us before you make any changes!

We have a more detailed article on this subject here if you need to know the specifics of modifying a lease car.

Are there any restrictions on who can drive a leased car?

Leased cars must be driven by the named driver(s) on the agreement, and additional drivers may need to be declared. Unauthorised drivers could invalidate your insurance. Some contracts also impose age or licence requirements for all drivers. Always review your policy to ensure compliance and avoid potential issues.

We have a more detailed article on this subject here if you need to know the specifics of modifying a lease car.

What documents do I need to take out a personal car lease?

To lease a car, you’ll typically need proof of identity (e.g., passport or driving licence), proof of address (e.g., utility bill or bank statement), and proof of income (e.g., payslips or P60).

What is the difference between business and personal car leasing?

Personal leasing is for private use, with no VAT reclaim and typically lower mileage allowances. Business leasing is for company use, allowing VAT recovery and higher mileage allowances. Personal contracts are simpler, while business leases may include additional services like fleet management.

What happens if my leased car is stolen?

If your leased car is stolen, you must report it to the police and your insurer immediately. Your insurance should cover the theft, but you may still be liable for the excess. The leasing company will guide you through the process, and you may need to continue payments until the claim is resolved or a replacement vehicle is arranged.

Can I claim tax relief on a personally leased car?

You generally cannot claim tax relief on a personally leased car, as it’s for private use. However, if you use the car for business purposes, you may be able to claim a portion of the costs as expenses. Always consult a tax advisor to understand your specific situation and ensure compliance with HMRC regulations.
