Glenfinnan is visited by thousands of tourists every year wanting to see the famous train travelling over the viaduct
New plans to build a car park at a popular tourist destination which appears in the Harry Potter films have been submitted.
The Glenfinnan Viaduct is visited by thousands of tourists each year after it was made famous by appearing in the Harry Potter films and now plans are underway to make a car park for those wanting to stop and watch the steam train coming along the railway line and over the viaduct like they do in the movies.
A lack of parking for visitors to Glenfinnan has now become a health and safety issue says Glenfinnan Community Council, as vehicles are currently parking on the verges along the A830.
According to Ingrid Henderson from the council, many visitors were “abandoning” their vehicles on the Fort William to Mallaig road and also using other small roads close by in “sheer desperation” to see the train coming over the viaduct.
“None of us wants to be the grumpy local that is chasing people away, but there is a real safety concern,” she said, adding: “It’s been highlighted by some of the local hauliers as to how people are abandoning their cars on the main road.”
If an emergency situation was to arise and emergency service vehicles needed calling out, they would struggle to get through some of the smaller roads into the village because of the number of visitor vehicles parked up.
Concern has been raised in the past regarding health and safety after some fans of the Harry Potter films took their love of the books by J K Rowling to dangerous levels by wandering onto the railway line to take photographs of the Glenfinnan Viaduct.
According to British Transport Police, such incidents have played their role in the 16% increase of railway trespassing offences in Scotland back in 2016 and has issued a new warning to people that they should keep away from the area of the West Highland Line.
Back in 2015, a couple along with their child were amongst others seen running along the railway line.
