New study shows that black box devices are on the increase amongst British motorists
New research carried out by the British Insurance Broker’s Association (BIBA) shows that motorists in the UK are increasingly opting for telematics technology to be installed in their vehicles by insurance companies.
According to the study 455,000 British motorists now have a black box device installed in their car; this is compared to 323,000 at the end of 2014 and just 12,000 in 2009. Motorists can opt for the telematics box in order to benefit from an insurance premium discount of up to 25%.
For this reason, many young drivers are choosing to have a telematics box installed in their car because of the rising costs of insurance premiums for this age group.
The telematics device is installed by the insurance company and measures the driver’s acceleration, braking and speed. It also tracks their journeys using a built-in GPS system.
The small box contains a SIM card and transmits the data from the box to the insurance provider, who uses the information to assess the motoring skills of the driver and their risk level.
Graeme Trudgill, Executive Director at BIBA, said that installing a telematics device in your vehicle could reduce the chance of a collision by up to 40%.
Mr Trudgill added: “We are delighted to see these figures increasing, the benefits of a greater take-up of telematics technology are many: more affordable premiums, safer roads, reduced uninsured driving and increase personal safely because some even operate as breakdown locator.”
