Stopping at a red light could cost you a £100 fine

But why when you’re stopping as you should do?

It sounds crazy but it’s true, you could actually be hit with a fine and three points on your licence while stopped at a red light but why when you’re stopping as you should?
We all know that running a red light could land us in hot water but most drivers have no idea that we could also be punished whilst waiting at the lights.
The reason motorists stopped at a red light could be punished is down to Advanced Stop Lines (ASL). They are now commonplace around cities and even some towns and are there to ensure that cyclists have a safe place to stop at the lights whilst mingling with other traffic on the road.

ASL’s provide cyclists with their own stop space in front of cars so that when the lights turn to green, they can safely begin to move on.
If a motorists is caught within this space they could face a fine of £100 and given three penalty points.
Even motorbikes and scooters found in the designated box could be in trouble if caught.
The police could issue a fine and penalty points to a driver if you go from a stationary position to slowly moving into the box whilst the lights are on red.
Also, if there’s traffic blocking the road ahead, you must stay behind the white line and not attempt to approach or enter the box.
The only exception is if a driver enters the box as the lights are changing and slamming on would be dangerous.
“Some signal-controlled junctions have advanced stop lines to allow cycles to be positioned ahead of other traffic,” says the Highway Code.
“Motorists, including motorcyclists, MUST stop at the first white line reached if the lights are amber or red and should avoid blocking the way or encroaching on the marked area at other times, e.g. if the junction ahead is blocked.”
