In 2016, an alarming 2.15 million drivers were caught for speeding
According to new official figures released by the Department for Transport, an alarming 2.15 million motorists in the UK were caught last year for speeding. Back in 2011, this figure stood at 1.6 million in comparison.
The number of drivers caught by the police for speeding on UK roads has climbed to a six-year high.
The data has also revealed that an extra 28,000 motorists in the UK were handed a fixed penalty notice (FPN), made to appear at court, or given a written warning for speeding in 2016 – up from 2015.
Just six years previous, a total of 1.61 million motorists were caught for speeding.

Overall, the data discovered that due to the increased number of drivers being caught for speeding, there was a rise in all types of traffic offences. A total of 3,059,000 drivers were caught for some kind of traffic offence last year, compared to 3,049,000 in 2015, whilst in 2011, the figures was below 3 million at 2,892,000.
In 2016, it was found that more drivers were pulled up for issues relating to driving licences, documentation and insurance compared to the previous year, rising to 337,000 from 306,000, however rates have fallen drastically for other road offences.
Motorists caught for careless, dangerous or drink-driving however fell to 179,000 last year. In 2015, this figures stood at 190,000, whilst back in 2011 it was at 276,000. Also dropping was the number of drivers caught for unauthorised taking or theft of a motor vehicle – 6,000 were caught last year, whereas in 2015 the figure was 7,000 and six years ago it stood at 9,000.
