Seven out of 10 new cars now feature active driver assistance systems

Is this why the number of accidents on UK roads has fallen by 10% in five years?

According to new research, around 7 of out 10 new cars now feature active driver assistance systems such as blind junction view and parking assistance.
Research has also concluded that running alongside the introduction of such features, is the fact that there’s been an increase in road safety, with accidents falling by 10% from 2011 to 2016, so could the advance in technology have something to do with these positive results?
The analysis was carried out by the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) who looked at the protective systems now available on new cars, which either come as standard or as an extra option.

Their findings discovered that 66.8% of new cars are now available with collision warning systems, whilst 41.2% are available with overtaking sensors which are widely known as blind spot warning and a further 53.1% offer autonomous emergency braking (AEB).
What these figures tell us is that more than a million new cars from a total of 2.5 million cars sold in 2017 had collision warning systems fitted, whilst around one quarter of a million had an AEB system.
One of the more significant systems to have surfaced in recent years is autonomous emergency braking, as experts reckon it has resulted in a 38% reduction in rear-end crashes.
AEB is available as an option on 24.7% of new cars but does come as standard now with a remarkable 28.4% of new cars.
“Safety is the number one priority for vehicle manufacturers… Fully autonomous cars may still be some way off but millions of consumers are already enjoying the benefits of new technology which can only help make our roads safer,” said Mike Hawes, SMMT’s chief executive.
