RAC sends warning out to motorists – Be ready for ‘Frantic Friday!’

Chaos expected on roads up and down the country on the last Friday before Christmas

The RAC is warning motorists to be ready for a hectic Friday across the country as many people will be heading off for Christmas or driving home from work on the last Friday before celebrations begin.
The breakdown and recovery company have nicknamed it ‘Frantic Friday’ and expects around 1.25 million drivers will be on the roads this Friday for leisure, adding to the already congested roads up and down the country.
The run-up to Christmas tends to bring with it much busier roads all over the UK but the last working day before Christmas is normally exceptionally frantic as a mixture of commuters all fight for space on the roads.

This year the last working day falls on the 22 December, so ‘Frantic Friday’ is best avoided if you’re planning a long journey ahead of Christmas.
One piece of good news however is that schools up and down the country are breaking up for Christmas at different times, so traffic should be more evenly spread throughout the week.
The RAC estimates that around 1.4 million motorists will be on the roads in the final week before Christmas, with leisure traffic expected to be worse on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day even.
However, it’s believed that Christmas Eve will be busiest as more and more leisure trips are expected on this day, mixed with last minute shoppers rushing out to buy more presents.
Early this month, Highways England announced they would ensure that 99% of motorways and major A-roads are kept free of roadworks over the festive period to ease congestion and allow motorists to enjoy a hassle-free and relaxed Christmas and New Year.
