Revealed: 265 Brits over the age of 100 still hold a full UK driving licence!
According to newly released figures, for the first time ever the number of people over 70 years of age and still holding a full UK driving licence has exceeded five million.
The DVLA’s data also revealed that 265 Brits over the age of 100 still hold a full UK driving licence and the oldest licence holding drivers are four people who are all aged 104.
Since October 2015, there’s been a 15% rise in the number of centenarians still holding a licence.
In the UK, at the age of 70 older drivers have to declare every three years whether they are fit or not to continue driving, however no medical or driving examination is required.
Older drivers shouldn’t be a concern to younger road users
This has led to some concern as to whether a number of elderly people who really aren’t fit to be on the roads remain behind the wheel, whilst others might be hanging up their keys much too early and as a result leaving themselves excluded from activities and services.
“Calls are routinely made for more testing of older drivers but most tend to have very good safety records and recognise their own limitations,” said Steve Gooding, director of motoring research charity, the RAC Foundation.
In November last year as part of their industrial strategy, two of the four key challenges that ministers set out focused on mobility and the ageing society.
In recent years, the proportion of the UK population aged 90 and over has enlarged faster than most younger age groups.
According to the Office for National Statistics, in 2016 there was approximately 14,900 people aged around 100.
