Lane-hogging is one of our biggest gripes…

Yet only 1 out of 4 drivers in the UK use the inside lane!

When asked in previous surveys what irritates drivers the most about other road users, one of their biggest gripes after tailgating and those who push in was lane-hoggers, yet despite this only 1 in 4 motorists in the UK use the inside lane.
Even though the inside lane remains pretty empty, half of all vehicles using the motorway sit in the middle lane.
Direct Line Car Insurance have carried out a new study and released their findings after analysing 70 hours of footage on motorways up and down the country.
What they discovered is that just 23% of traffic on UK motorways actually travels on the inside lane.

A few years ago lane hogging became a punishable offence and was classed as careless driving, so too was tailgating and ‘pushing in’. Those caught by the police now face a £100 fine and three points on their driving licence and if the case ends up in court, the penalties could increase.
Yet despite this, their survey found that 43% of lane-hoggers remain in the middle lane and make no attempt to go back into the inside lane, just so they don’t have to pull out again to pass a lorry or a slow vehicle further along.
It’s believed that middle lane hogging can increase congestion and so drivers need to be made aware of the importance of using the inside lane rather than just sitting in the middle lane. Avoiding changing lanes so you don’t have to overtake stops drivers from using this important skill and with new helpful in-car technology, there’s no reason why drivers shouldn’t be able to travel safely.
In the Highway Code, rule 264 says: “You should always drive in the left-hand lane when the road ahead is clear. If you are overtaking a number of slower-moving vehicles, you should return to the left-hand lane as soon as you are safely past.”
