It’s the end of the road once again for the Volkswagen Beetle, with production to cease in 2019.
The bubble shaped VW Beetle became a well-loved motor thanks to Walt Disney films from the 1960s starring Herbie the Love Bug, who had a mind of his own and was able to drive himself.
The model was brought back to life two decades ago by the German car manufacturer’s but now it’s the end of the road once more for this classic car which will be given a big send off in America with two runout specials – the Final Edition SE and Final Edition SEL.
The Beetle will stop being produced so that VW can focus more on their electrified car range which is being expanded to cover a full range of family-focused models.

According to president and CEO of Volkswagen Group North America, Hinrich J. Woebcken: “There’s no room for a niche retro pastiche,” however Mr Woebcken did add: “But as we have seen with the I.D. Buzz – which is the modern and practical interpretation of the legendary Bus – I would also say, ‘never say never’.”
This time around though, VW have decided that the Beetle will be given a proper celebratory send off, with a number of special events planned culminating in the end of production in Puebla in July 2019.
The Final Edition Beetles will be painted in two special colours – Safari Uni will be a tribute to the 1998 new Beetle’s Harvest Moon Beige, whilst Stonewashed Blue will pay homage to the 1970s Jeans Bug Beetle.
They will also be available in black, grey and white for those aren’t interested in the history of the Beetle.
Both Final Edition models will have a special ‘Beetle’ badge fitted to the boot lid, whereas up to now VW have placed a stylish ‘Turbo’ logo there.
Both cars will have all the modern features, including climate control, a range of driver assist systems and a unique seat trim, as well as a 174hp 2.0-litre TSI petrol turbo engine.
