Holiday season is here and many of us will be embarking on a long journey, so here’s how to stay awake and stay safe..
GEM Motoring Assist is pleading with motorists in the UK to recognise the onset of fatigue whilst driving, especially on a long journey.
The road safety and breakdown recovery organisation are urging drivers during the holiday season to consider the dangers of fatigue.
Thousands of families will be setting off during the summer on a long road journey to a holiday destination either here in the UK, or somewhere abroad and GEM Motoring Assist would like to ensure that we all get there safely.
According to GEM’s road safety officer, Neil Worth, fatigue does play a major part in road accidents, especially those that occur in the early hours of the morning.

Fatigue can lead to a reduced ability to respond quickly and safely in the event of a dangerous situation occurring and is the main cause of many an accident.
Mr Worth recommends before setting off on a long journey that you are totally rested and stop for regular breaks whilst you’re on your travels.
“Statistics show that those most at risk from a fatigue-related collision include young male drivers, shift workers, truck drivers and company car drivers. Around 85% of drivers who cause fatigue-related crashes are male, and more than one third of these are aged under 30,” said Mr Worth.
If you read the Highway Code, it does provide motorists with good advice on how to avoid being caught up in a fatigue-related crash, such as planning your journey properly before you set off, stopping to take a break every two hours for 15 minutes and avoiding taking certain medications that could effect your driving.
Other tips include avoiding certain times of the day and night, such as rush hour and on very long journeys, ensure you stop overnight somewhere to get a good night’s rest.
Planning is vital to ensure you enjoy a safe journey – avoid alcohol beforehand, try and get as much sleep as you can before you set off and stop regularly on the way!
