Ever bought part-worn tyres for your car just to save money?

New investigation discovers more than 90% of retailers are selling unsafe and illegal tyres to motorists

Buying tyres can be costly, especially if more than one is needed at the same time, so to save money many motorists in the UK turn to part-worn tyres as a means of replacing the ones they have but according to a new investigation this could be dangerous, as it’s found that retailers are selling customers part-worn tyres that are unsafe to use and illegal.

For the past five years, Trading Standards and TyreSafe have collaborated on an investigation into products being offered in the UK to customers by outlets selling part-worn tyres.

Out of the 152 companies selling part-worn tyres throughout the country, an alarming 139 were found to be offering unsafe and illegal tyres to motorists without their knowledge.

Only 13 firms (or 9% of the businesses reviewed) were found to be offering customers roadworthy tyres.

New investigation discovers more than 90% of retailers are selling unsafe and illegal tyres to motorists.

What this national investigation shows is that retailers offering second-hand tyres to the public are choosing to either ignore their responsibility in keeping motorists safe or don’t have the skills and experience required to run such a business.

Investigators working undercover found in some cases that tyres had been fitted with water in them, whilst others had provided the incorrect size of tyre and on numerous occasions it was also recorded that part-worn tyres had been supplied with nails and other objects nested in them.

Following the investigation into such retailers, one firm was prosecuted for selling unroadworthy rubber to the public and ordered to pay more than £7,000 in fines and costs.

According to TyreSafe: “In reaching their verdict the magistrates said they were shocked at the case and had considered the potential implications of selling unsafe tyres.”

When deciding what penalties to issue, a custodial sentence was considered and if more offences were to occur with the retailer, this could result in a prison term.

Stuart Jackson, Chairman of the safety charity, said: “While the shocking findings of joint investigations may reveal some part worn dealers are compliant, even if it is fewer than one-in-ten, motorists have a 90% chance of visiting an outlet selling illegal tyres.”

“As far as TyreSafe is aware, there is no other retail sector with such an atrocious track record,” added Mr Jackson.
