The 3D zebra crossing has been painted onto the road in a bid to slow down motorists and should be super easy to spot by cyclists as these clever optical illusions really stand out on the road.
According to the CEO of Vegamálun, Gauti Ívar Halldórsson, they only came up with the idea at the beginning of September and just a couple of weeks later, local authorities gave the company the go-ahead to trial them.
Workers spent the time practicing their 3D painting skills before the companies first optical illusion zebra crossing was painted onto the road in the town of Ísafjörður.
The idea has already been trialled in New Delhi, the capital of India, in a bid to reduce average speeds and have also been spotted in the Chinese capital of Beijing. So far, the results in New Delhi have proved positive as the average speed on the stretch it was painted on has come down from 50km/hr to 30km/hr. More 3D crossings will be introduced in the New Delhi area as a result.
These 3D zebra crossings are basically an optical illusion, painted onto the road to make them look 3D in appearance. Their intention is to make drivers slow down and for any pedestrians using them to pay more attention when crossing the road.
They not only encourage drivers to slow down but pedestrians are also super excited about using these ingenious 3D zebra crossings.
“A pedestrian crossing like this makes it look like there’s something blocking the road,” said Gauti Ívar Halldórsson.
