The Volvo XC60 wins the World Car of the Year 2018 title at the New York International Auto Show
It seems as though 2018 just keeps getting better and better for Volvo as they take yet another prestigious title at the New York International Auto Show.
The Volvo XC60 has won the World Car of the Year 2018 award, whilst the Range Rover Velar picked up the World Car Design of the Year award and the Nissan Leaf scooped up the World Green Car of the Year trophy.

All winners of the WCOTY were revealed at this year’s New York International Auto Show, where judges from all over the world chose the Volvo XC60 ahead of the competition which included the Velar and the Mazda CX-5.
“We are up against some tough competition, but this award for the XC60 shows that Volvo has the right combination of design, connectivity and safety that appeals to customers across the world,” said Volvo President and CEO, Håkan Samuelsson.
Other winners at the award ceremony included the BMW M5 taking home the World Performance Car of the Year award, Audi’s A8 scooped the World Luxury car award and the VW Polo took the crown for World Urban Car of the Year.
To be considered for top spot in any category, all eligible cars must have been on sale on at least two continents between 1 January 2017 and 31 May 2018.
Last year’s overall winner was the Jaguar F-Pace and in 2016 the trophy went to the Mazda MX-5. Back in 2011, the original Nissan Leaf took the overall trophy and the VW Polo won the title in 2010.
Not only do Volvo keep scooping up awards for their cars, this year at the Geneva Motor Show President and CEO of Volvo Car Group, Håkan Samuelsson, picked one up also, winning the first ever ‘World Car Person of the Year’.
“He’s someone who – against the odds – has successfully integrated his relatively small company into an automotive empire based on another continent. And as a result of this unlikely but seemingly happy marriage, both sides have emerged considerably stronger,” said the World Car of the Year judges on presenting the award.
