Future car headlights could change shape & beam strength automatically, improving road safety
Looking to the future, car headlights could have the ability to change shape & beam strength automatically and send out hologram-like projections, improving road safety for pedestrians and other road users.
Continental are working alongside Osram on the next generation of smart lights for vehicles, which will not only change shape and beam strength automatically but will also be able to project hologram projections such as warning signs and crossings onto the road.
The giant manufacturing company Continental and multinational lighting manufacturer Osram are currently developing fully adaptable LED lights that will have the ability to change their shape and beam strength automatically under different driver settings, plus matrix and laser lights will send out hologram projections onto the road in front, which could help to reduce the number of accidents on our roads.
Drivers will be alerted by the LED lights to pedestrians and other vulnerable road users such as cyclists and scooter riders.
This latest technology from Osram is known as Eviyos and uses a new type of pixelated LED light to form a fully adaptive lighting system that’s combined with sensors around the car. The design should be an improvement on the current adaptive LEDs.
Continental are expected to launch the new LED technology in 2020 and believe this next-generation technology could be seen in cars not long after.
The two companies are also working on projection technology that will enable drivers to interact with pedestrians and other road users. Whilst the smart new LED lights will enable the driver to recognise pedestrians and other vulnerable road users, the projection technology will allow the driver to project hologram-like images onto the road, such as a crosswalk, for pedestrians wanting to cross the road.
According to Continental, this type of technology will be vital in the future when more autonomous cars are on the roads, which will need to have the ability to communicate with pedestrians and other road users.
