UK Government Proposes Making It A New Building Code For All New Housing Developments

 

Yesterday (9 September) was World EV Day, an annual global day that celebrates and promotes the electric vehicle (EV) within the automotive industry. The event started in 2020 and has been created in part to help educate and raise awareness of EVs – how they work and the benefits.

We’re all aware that the Government has planned to ban the sale of all new petrol and diesel cars by the year 2030 here in the UK and the pressure is now on for the country to be ready. Their main target is getting the public on board and hopefully increasing the uptake of electric cars amongst drivers. The next big issue is having the infrastructure in place to deal with huge demand, which means upgrading the UK’s charging network.

One such helpful proposal being considered by the Government this year, is the introduction of a new building code which will ensure that all new housing developments will have to include EV-ready charging stations.

According to a recent survey, 31% of those taking part said their main concern over switching to an electric car was range, followed by charging (18%).

What the Government’s latest proposal would do is allow motorists to charge their electric vehicle overnight at home. This gives the driver a fully charged-up car ready for a journey. EV charging points will still have to be available in towns and cities, as well as on motorway service stations to allow for top-ups when necessary.

There are currently over 35,000 charging points across the UK, stationed in 13,000 designated locations. Most of them are located in designated parking spaces or on fuel stations.
